The Sunbather was a labour of love, of many long held ideas & inspiration. An exhibition that ran & held audience for more than a month. A nostalgic exploration, while also becoming a challenge to our present times.
Mikey Freedom’s work is perhaps less about finding balance than it is about the pursuit of it, that elusive thing we’re always chasing but never quite hold. There’s this quiet wrestling in his use of line, color, shape—like he's grappling with something larger, something ineffable. He dances, yes, but it’s not a light-hearted movement; it’s a tug-of-war between the forms and the meanings they embody, personal, visceral. The weight of it all, the symbolism, anchors his work like a secret, hidden just beneath the surface of each figure.
Sunbather therefore pulls at something deeper, at the edges of those half-forgotten summers, those stretches of heat and lazy afternoons. But it's more than that, so much more, because it asks something of us. The artist stops just short of answering, leaving us with a void that demands our own interpretation. There’s a drift to it, like wood floating on an endless tide, pulling us toward a future that promises nothing but rest, though it contrasts sharply with everything we know now. This is a world where play is endless, aimless, full of possibility, a world of bodies in time, in place, of nostalgia that still lingers, & yet bittersweet, for the one that slipped through our fingers, the fish that got away.
